Let me state clearly, there are structural and systemic imbalances in our societies. Many of these were—and continue to be—intentionally created to disenfranchise targeted groups, most often minorities. The small violences and large ones caused by these imbalances are suffered by actual people. As an American, our systemic imbalances seem particularly insidious. I am a participant in and a beneficiary of these imbalances simply because of the way I look and sound.
I want more diversity, equity, and inclusion in my societies—I want all people to belong. I want a fairer playing field. I want more just systems and structures. This requires me to work on uncovering and correcting my own internalized prejudices. I strive to read and learn from diverse perspectives. I strive to consider how my biases impact the software systems I build. I strive to identify, understand, and eliminate my microaggressions. These are not boxes I can check off. These are part of a life-long practice. I hope these efforts can in some small way contribute to increased safety, belonging, healing, and restored dignity.
Note: if some of the language here sounds familiar it's because it was heavily influenced by Layla F. Saad's words in her book "Me and White Supremacy".
